ダブリン旅の一日目の、二つのエピソード。
Two episodes from my first day in Dublin.
パブで。アメリカ人の夫婦（年嵩・白人）が入ってテーブルに座る。アイルランド人のバーテンが注文を受けにくる。その序でに世間話を少しする。
In a pub. An American couple (older, white) comes in and takes a table. The Irish barman comes over to take their order, and makes a little small talk in the process.
バーテン：お二方はどこから？
Barman: "Where are you from?"
亭主：カンザス。
Man: "Kansas."
バーテン：ああ、テキサス州のカンザス市でしょうね？
Barman: "Oh, Kansas, Texas, is it?"
ちょっと困った一瞬。亭主：あのですね、アメリカの、カンザスです。テキサス州より、まあ北の方。
An awkward, perplexed moment. Man: "Well, Kansas, United States. We're... north of Texas."
バーテン：ご注文はよろしいでしょうか？
Barman: "What'll you be having today?"
亭主：国のまあ真ん中ぐらいかな。
Man: "Sort of in the middle of the country."
細君：お品書きは見せてもらえませんか？
Wife: "Can we see a menu?"
路面電車の停留所の近く、一人の女性が僕に声をかけた。今夜ベルファストに帰るのにあと２ユーロだけ足りないと、強請ってきた。
A woman stopped me on the road near a tram station and told me that she just needed two euros to get home to Belfast.
（もちろん知っているよね。多分今月ずっと毎日、ベルファストへ帰るのにあと２ユーロを要していて、もし誰かから２ユーロをもらえてもそのお金をポッケに入れた瞬間にあら、また２ユーロだけ足りないんだ、大変たいへん。その繰り返しでしょう。）
(We know that, in all likelihood, she's needed two euros to get home to Belfast every day this month, and every time she gets two euros from someone she puts them in her pocket and then finds that she still needs two euros to get home to Belfast...)
僕は２ユーロをあげた。
I gave her the money.
