ちょっとこの前のブログ記事で聖書に書いてある十戒に触れて、それから十戒と七つの大罪の対比に関して考えている。
In a post a while back I mentioned the ten commandments. Since then I've been thinking of the contrast between them and the seven deadly sins.
十戒は、積極的にしなくてはならない行動（主を唯一に拝むこと、安息日を守ること、父母を尊敬すること）、または絶対にしてはいけない行動（偶像崇拝、主の名を不謹慎に口にすること、殺人、不倫、窃盗、虚言、貪ること）だ。
The ten commandments are things you must do (worship Yahweh, observe the sabbath, honor parents), or things you must not do (worship idols, take Yahweh's name in vain, kill, adulter, steal, lie, covet).
社会的または宗教的な秩序を保つためのルールもあり、他人に害を及ぼす恐れのあるものだから禁じられている行動もあるのだ。
Some of these tend to maintain social and religious order, while the others are prohibited because of their potential to cause harm to others.
つまり十戒は、行動とその世の中への影響が対象となっている。
In other words, all ten have their focus on the effects of one's actions upon the world.
その一方、七つの大罪はしなくてはならない行動でもしてはいけない行動でもない。むしろ、陥ってはいけない精神状態を述べているのだ。その精神状態は肉欲・大喰らい・貪欲・怠惰・憤怒・羨望・傲慢だ。十戒とはまた違うのだ。
The seven deadly sins, on the other hand, are not things one must or must not do, but rather states of mind into which one must not fall (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, pride). This is very different.
十戒に関係していなくはないのだが。七つの大罪という精神状態に陥るとそれらの具体的な禁じられている、他人に害を及ぼす行動につながることはあるから。でも七つの大罪そのものは行動ではない。他人に害を及ぼすこともあるだろうが、先ずはその罪人に害を及ぼしてしまうのだ。罪人の魂を衰えさせて、救いを妨げるのだ。
While these sins are connected to the ten commandments in that they lead one to specific actions that cause harm and are therefore prohibited, the sins themselves are not actions. In addition to (or prior to) harming others, they harm the sinner. They decay the soul of the sinner and stave off salvation.
その反面、殺人や不倫や窃盗はなぜ禁じられているかというとその殺人者・不倫者・窃盗者などの魂に傷をつけるのだから、とは十戒には書いてないようだ。
There is no indication, on the other hand, that things like murder, adultery, or theft are prohibited because they may harm the murderer, adulterer, or thief.
一番知らないうちに悪影響を及ぼすのは傲慢だと僕は思う。残りの六つは、犯しながらそれを犯しているという自覚は可能なのだけれど、傲慢という大罪だけの特徴は、犯している間にはそれに気づくことは全く不可能であることなのだ。
I think the most insidious of the seven is pride. You may commit the other six while being perfectly aware that that's what you're doing, but the distinguishing feature of pride as a sin is that the sinner cannot be aware of it in the moment of commission.
