「当たり前」という言葉はあまり好きではない。
なぜ好きではないか少し説明するね。
I don't particularly care for the phrase, "It's obvious."
I'll tell you why.
「当たり前」は、論理的思考をするのがめんどくさいとき、あるいは都合に悪いとき、そんなときにとても便利な言葉だ。
"It's obvious" is a phrase often conveniently used when it would be too much trouble, or too uncomfortable, to bring logical thought to bear.
短絡的な考え方を助長する言葉だ。批判的思考を短絡してくれる言葉。
It short-circuits rationality. It pulls the rug out from under critical thinking.
弁明したくない信条、掘り下げたくない事実、むしろ鵜呑みにしたいそのアイデアを、考えなくてもよくする言葉。
It excuses us from having to think through beliefs or justify ideas that we'd prefer to just swallow whole.
実は「当たり前」に思われる事が実際に本当のことだったという例は僕には見たことがないと思う。
In fact, I don't believe anything I've ever taken for granted as "obvious" has turned out to be entirely true.
その反面、本当のことを知っても（知ることさえほぼないだろうが）その真実は「当たり前」に思われる事とまったく似ていない。そう簡単なもんじゃないんだ。
And conversely, I think I've never seen anything true (as hard as truth ever is to see anyway) that neatly corresponded with what common sense would have as "obvious".
とはいえ、僕だって毎日のように「当たり前」という言葉をついつい口にしていると思う。
Yet it goes without saying that I probably use the word practically every day.
