adjusting our analysands

初めてダブリンの紋章に気づいたのは、公衆ゴミ箱に載せていたものかな。それともバスの壁に書いてある。

I think I first noticed the Dublin coat of arms on the side of a rubbish bin. Or it might have been on a city bus.


見たのはこれ。"Baile Átha Cliath"とはアイルランド語でダブリンのことだ。

Here's what I saw. "Baile Átha Cliath" is how you say Dublin in Irish.

これを見て、最初はがっかりした。ロゴや象徴として何かの歴史があるかどうか知らなかった。ただ古代史の象徴となるダブリン城がどこかの会社のロゴのようなベクタ画像にされて「失敬」されているだけのように僕には見えるのだった。こんなロゴを描けるようになるためにイラストレーターの講座を受ける、というふうな感じ。

My first reaction to this logo was disappointment. I didn't know whether it had any history as a logo or symbol. All I saw was a symbol of ancient history appropriated as a vector-drawn corporate-type logo. The sort of thing people take classes in Illustrator to learn how to design.


「でもまあ、Dが丸に囲んだなどのロコよりはましだからいいや」と僕は思った。

"Oh, well," I thought. "As logos go, I guess it's better than a 'D' in a circle."


それから同じロゴが色々なところで見つかったのだ。

After that, the same logo started popping up in a variety of places.

このロゴはどれだけ古くからあるかなと考え始めた。最初は現代に創られたとてっきり思ったが、上の街路灯のとおり、歴史を漂わすもっと古そうなバージョンも見かける。

I began to wonder just how old this logo was. At first I'd assumed it was a modern creation; but some of the time, as with the streetlight above, it seemed a bit older.


Then I found this dedication, dated 1886. If the symbol above was placed there contemporaneous to the dedication, that makes it older than I'd assumed. そこでこの1886年の献呈の辞が見つかった。上のシンボルも同時代のものなのであれば、やはり僕が思ったより古くからあるものだろう。

のちにグーグル先生に訊ねてみたら、ダブリンの紋章は１３世紀からのものだと判明した。３城の城は元々は小塔の三つあるダブリン城だったらしくて、出ている炎は都市を守ろうという市民の熱心の象徴だそうだ。ラテン語のもっとは、「都市に従順な市民は幸せである」という意味らしい。

So later I checked with Prof. Google, and it turns out the Dublin Coat of arms dates to the 13th century. The three castles were originally a three-turreted Dublin Castle. The flames represent "the zeal of the citizens in defence of the city". The Latin motto extols obedience in the citizenry.


東京都には紋章はないな、確かに。とにかく僕には見たことがない。うらやましくなるべきかな。

Tokyo doesn't have a coat of arms; at least, none that I've ever seen. Should we be jealous, I wonder.


グーグル先生がいうには、紋章のデザインは歳月が経つと変化していき、時代の価値観と趣味によって変わりに変わってきたみたいだ。だが僕がその様々な種々の中でなぜ一番現代的なものだけが気に入らないのか。（僕、お高くとまった奴かな。）

Prof. Google informs me that the design of the coat of arms has changed and changed again over the centuries, no doubt in accordance with the tastes and values of the times. So why, out of all the variants, does only the most modern one look tacky to me? (Perhaps I'm a snob.)
