Women like men for their money because it signals an ability to provide for offspring.

And so on and so forth.
この理論の善し悪しはともかく、ユーモアに関してはどう語るのだろう。
For whatever this theory is worth, I wonder where humor fits in.
女性はユーモアに対して反応してくれるから男性はユーモア感を育てるのだ。そのお陰で体力も金もルックスもない男でも遺伝を続けさせることができるのだ。
Men develop senses of humor because women like it. It's a way for the sickly, homely and penniless to nevertheless communicate their genes.
でも女性はなぜユーモアを好むのか。一体何の進化論的な利益があるのだろうか。
But what do women like it for? What evolutionary advantage accrues to them?
ウィットは知力を示すか？そのためにウィットのある者は淘汰されて残るか？
Does a quick wit signal intelligence? Has it been selected for for this reason?
もしそうであれば、そして男性がどうも頭の良い女性を恐れる傾向があることも考えて、なぜユーモアの優れた女性がこんなにいるのか、この説はどう説明するのだろう。
If it has, and knowing how threatened men can be by intelligent women, how does one explain all the uproariously funny women out there?
