As Beatrix passes to get into her car, the mailbox door swings open. There's nothing inside.
自動車の計器盤に太陽の光が力強く当たる。車内は嘔吐しまくった子猫の匂いがする。腐った匂いなのだ。
The sun beats strong upon the dashboard. It smells like sick kittens inside the car. It's a rotten odor.
彼女はラジオをつける。この逆夢の中では人がまだラジオを聴く時代なのだ。アナウンサーの声が聞こえてくる。「…放射能の詰めた缶がいくつか残るという…」ビアトリクスは他の局に切り換える。
Beatrix turns on the radio. In this fevered dream, people still listen to the radio. The newsreader's voice says, "...cans of leftover radiation—" She switches the station.
「…他人は不都合…」何かのオールタナティブロックの歌詞。またチャンネルを切り替える。
"...other people are inconvenient—" Some kind of alternative rock song. She switches again.
「…事実と道徳と意図はこんがらがってしまい…」何かのトーク番組。NHKか何か。また切り替える。無数のイナゴの鳴き声の音が流れてくる。この局にしておく。
"...facts, morality, intention – all tied in knots—" Some kind of talk program. NPR? She switches again. The sound of buzzing locusts comes on; she leaves it there.
