There's a phrase in Japanese that I really like.
例えばポテチの袋があるとしよう。袋に商品写真が載っている。あるよね、そういう、袋の中に何が入っているかありありと鮮明に見えるような写真だね。
Take a bag of potato chips. On the side of the bag they've got a photo of the chips. You know, so you can see what the product looks like, in photorealistic detail.
写真の下に小さな文字で書いてある。「写真はイメージです。」
Under the photo, a small line of text. Shashin wa imeji desu. "This photo is an image."
ツボだ。
Priceless.
ほら、写真じゃないか。イメージ以外の何物でもないんじゃない？他に何だよ？旋律か？踊りか？「写真は俳句です」とか？
Look, it's a photo. What else could it be but an image? A melody? A dance move? "This photo is a sonnet."
消費者を想像する。お金を払って商品を購入しました。目の前に何が見えるか。ポテチそうだ。手を伸ばしてそのポテチを取ろうとするのだが、だが、しかし、指が掴むのはただのプラスチック製の袋だけだ！「こ、こ、これは本物のポテチじゃないんだ！まさか！ただのイメージだ！」
I imagine a consumer. They've paid money to purchase a product. They see what looks like a potato chip. They reach for it. But behold! Their hand finds nothing but crinkly plastic. "This...
this... this isn't an actual potato chip! My god, it's just an image!"
