To prepare arrangements for 'tate to hoko', the seventh song on Bluehour's new album 'The Winter', Kazuya and I went into the studio and tried out various bass and drum ideas.

As he'd strum the song, I'd try different things on the drums. Sticks, brushes, mallets... Heavier beats, lighter ones... Several different patterns...

Nothing sounded good. I think it was Kazuya who finally said, "Maybe we don't need drums..." I think he was right.

In the end, he recorded it live, solo, similarly to 'horegusuri'.

There's also a bass guitar in there, but I don't mind if you don't notice it.

'tate to hoko' means 'shield and halberd'. Defense and attack. Antagonism. There is also a Japanese word that combines these two characters to mean 'contradiction'.

I think the lyrics are about sad resignation to the fact that a relationship is breaking down rancorously.

When that happens, what do you do?
